Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep is one of the latest additions in the Kingdom Hearts series, the game was announced back in September at the Tokyo Game Show; alongside two other Kingdom Hearts titles – Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days and Kingdom Hearts: Coded. Of the three titles, it’s speculated that Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep will be the last of the three games to hit the market. The main reason for this is that the team that’s working on Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep is also the team that worked on Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories – during the development of Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep, the team put the game on hiatus to work on Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories whilst production on the other two Kingdom Hearts titles continued.
Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep takes place approximately ten years before the original Kingdom Hearts title, and tells the tale of the three knights that were revealed to us in Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix+’s Birth By Sleep trailer.
“The Keyblade is said to hold phenomenal power. One legend says its wielder saved the world, while another says that he wrought chaos and ruin upon it.” - Ansem Report
The above quote, taken from one of the Ansem Reports in Kingdom Hearts pretty much sums up Birth By Sleep’s storyline – the game will be about two opposing sides; one that wants to use the Keyblade to save the world and another that wants to use it’s power to wreak chaos upon the world. Terra, Ven and Aqua (the three knights shown in the Birth By Sleep trailer) are the heroes who are said to use the Keyblade to save the world – whilst Master Xehanort and his apprentice, who is currently dubbed Dark Soldier are the Keyblade wielders that will bring destruction upon the world.

Originally Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep was intended to be very similar to Kingdom Hearts II in the way that the battle system worked, however in a recent interview with Tetsuya Nomura it was revealed that Birth By Sleep will play in a similar fashion to Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories. This probably means that Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep will feature the deck system that was present in Re:Chain of Memories.
Birth By Sleep will also give the player a choice of characters, you’ll be given a choice to play as Terra, Ven or Aqua. These characters will cross one another’s paths at several points throughout the storyline, however to understand what’s fully going on in Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep you’ll have to complete each characters individual storyline.
Graphically it looks as if Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep is really pushing the PSP’s hardware, and from the screenshots we’ve seen it looks as if the games graphics might actually rival those of the first Kingdom Hearts on PlayStation 2. Either way, this game looks stunning for a PSP title, vastly improving on Square Enix’s last PSP outing – Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.
