Final Fantasy Crystal ChroniclesNintendo’s seen its fair share of classics over the years, with household names such as Mario and Link but since the days of the Super Nintendo there’s been one series that Nintendo hasn’t been able to nail – Final Fantasy. Until now that is, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles comes bursting onto the Nintendo GameCube bringing an entirely new style of game play with it.

Final Fantasy has always been about a single player adventure, with a deep and complex storylines that would keep the player engaged until the very end – however, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles breaks this mould, and instead is a multi-player adventure with a fairly basic storyline. Now you’re probably thinking that a basic storyline sounds like a bad thing, usually it would be but in Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles case it isn’t as Crystal Chronicles is a multi-player adventure that’s heavily based on character customization.

Final Fantasy Crystal ChroniclesDue to the heavy emphasis on character customization, it makes it difficult for this game to have a complex storyline so Square Enix has stripped this title down to the basics. You begin the game by creating a character that can either be male or female and one of any four tribes, each tribe has its own different strengths and weaknesses in battle and that’s what makes this game so much more fun in multi-player. So you’ve probably noticed that I’ve been rambling on about multi-player, and this really isn’t something you’d expect to see in a Final Fantasy – however in Crystal Chronicles it works, in fact the game is designed for multi-player with a multi-player that far surpasses that of the one player storyline.

Final Fantasy Crystal ChroniclesAnother way in which Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles introduces a new style is the battle system, rather than the traditional turn based system Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles introduces a new, Action RPG style battle system. The battle system’s actually pretty simple in comparison to that of previous Final Fantasy titles, as it doesn’t really involve that much thinking, however this is part of the beauty of Crystal Chronicles. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles is a fun, light hearted Final Fantasy game that can be picked up and played at anytime, by anyone and it doesn’t require the huge commitment that has put many people of the Final Fantasy series.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles has great graphics, and although it doesn’t feature any full motion video clips like in the main series games – the in game visuals are still incredible, easily rivalling those of the PlayStation 2 titles such as Final Fantasy X. In a nutshell, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles is a fun game that doesn’t quite live up to it’s main series counterparts – but anyone who’s played the game will realise that this isn’t the point of Crystal Chronicles, and they will know that this game was made with the fun factor in mind and because of this Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles is still a great title. The fact that the game also has some great graphics and an even better soundtrack makes this one of the better side series titles.
