Final Fantasy XIII is Square Enix’s latest main series outing that’s been developed as part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis Compilation for PlayStation 3. Like the twelve previous main series titles, Final Fantasy XIII will be an RPG featuring an entirely new cast of characters; though at this moment in time only three of the main characters have been revealed to us.
Development started on Final Fantasy XIII sometime in 2004, using Square Enix’s latest game engine, Crystal Tools – formerly known as the White Engine. So far we’ve seen two trailers for the game, the E3 trailer and a trailer that was bundled with the CLOUD DVD that was released exclusively in Japan. From the trailer the game’s graphics look amazing, surpassing anything we’ve seen on the PS3 so far; in fact I’d go as far as to say that in Final Fantasy XIII it’s difficult to notice the difference between in game cutscenes and pre-rendered cutscenes.

Considering that only two trailers have been released, we don’t really know anything about Final Fantasy XIII’s storyline or characters. So far we know that Final Fantasy XIII’s world is split into two, Cocoon and Pulse. Cocoon is a city that floats above Pulse and is the perfect human environment – below Cocoon is Pulse, a world ridden in monsters. From the trailers it looks as if Lightning is with Pulse, leading an assault against Cocoon, who appears to be the games enemy.
So far three characters have been confirmed, although we don’t actually know their names. The three characters we know about so far are Lightning, who’s name is actually a codename, Mr. 33 CM who’s named after his shoe size and appears to be a friend of Lightning’s and finally a girl with red pig tails.
Final Fantasy XIII will be the game to bring Final Fantasy to into the next generation, and it goes without saying that this title will be a must have for any gamer – and will most likely be worth buying a PlayStation 3 for.
