Battle System
KOS-MOSXenosaga Episode II has a very unique battle system, like I said in the review instead of just scrolling through endless menu screens and awaiting your turn things are slightly different.
The first thing you'll notice is that when your attacking several commands are available in the bottom left hand corner of the screen such as Square and Circle. You also have combinations of buttons such as Square Square or Square Triangle, each series of buttons will make the selected character perform an attack, for a list of a characters attacks look at the Tech menu by pressing Triangle whilst on the field.

Each button corresponds to a zone, Zones are the location in which an attack hits an enemy. For example by pressing Circle you will hit in either Zone A or Zone B. Zones are the height in which an attack hits, so Zone A is the highest point on the enemies body that they can hit.

Circle button hits either Zone A or Zone B depending on which character you are playing as, note that not all characters can hit in Zone A without performing a combination of attacks.
Square button will hit in either Zone B or Zone C depending on which character you are playing as.
Triangle button will hit in Zone C.

All enemies have a weak zone, and when you hit an enemies weak zone the letter will come up on the upper right of the screen in Red. However when using a combination of attacks you will notice the second attack doesn't always have the same weak zone as the first, for example hitting in B then C zones could be an enemies weak zones, and too do this you would press Square then Triangle. An enemy can have a series of weak points up to 4, for example BCBB.

You'll notice that you can only use up to two attacks after each other, so how are you meant to hit an enemies weak point 4 times? Well there are two answers to this question, the first is using the Stock command. To bring up the option to use stock press the X button during your turn, this will give you a choice to either use Stock, Ether, Item, Double or Move, chose Stock to use the Stock command. Stocking allows you to store up attacks for later, and you can stock up to 3 extra attacks.
Once you have the amount of stocked up attacks you want (you can tell how many you have by looking under the characters EP at the top of the screen, it will appear in a series of three red bars) you can then unleash a combination of attacks like usual but afterwards a series of Circle button commands will appear afterwards. This allows you to attack up to 5 times in one turn!

The other method is Boosting, to boost you hold down the R1 shoulder button then press either Square, Triangle or Circle depending on what character you want to boost. Boosting basically lets a character jump the que for attacking, which is in the bottom right corner of the screen. So once you've boosted a character they will attack on the turn after you've boosted them!
But there is a limit to how many times you can boost, the Boost Gauge appears above the character icons on the bottom right corner of the screen, it can go up to 3 maximum, unless you use a Boost MAX, which the the max is 5. The number on the right the Gauge tells you how many times you can boost before the Gauge needs refilling, to refill the Gauge all you have to do is unleash successful attacks and combos on an enemy.

An advantage of Stocking and Boosting is that you can use Double attacks. Double Attacks are an attack which two members of your party execute, they are much more powerful than normal attacks but they have to be unlocked by meeting certain requirements such as completing missions in the GS Path. To find out which characters can execute a Double attack look in the Tech menu by pressing Triangle whilst on the field.
To do a Double attack you need to stock up a character so they have at least 2 Stock Bars, then boost the character they do the Double with so they attack straight after. Once you've done this press X to open the menu and select Double.

By hitting an enemies weak zones several times you can put the Break status upon them, this will only usually last a turn but whilst in Break you unleash 1.5x the amount of damage to them that you usually would, also whilst they are in Break you can inflict the Air and Down status on them.
By pressing Circle whilst an enemy is in Break you sometimes either knock them to the floor or launch them in to the air. If they stay suspended on the ground or in the air they have either Air or Down inflicted on them. This only lasts a few turns, usually two at the most but whilst in Air or Down you inflict 2x the amount of damage to the enemy. Also sometimes an enemy can fall from the Air status and land in the Down status which means you have an even bigger oppertunity to do double damage to them!

Down in the bottom right corner, where the Boost Gauge is you'll notice the Event Slot, in this small box an icon will appear which can say either CTC, BST, SKL, ETR, T·C, RV or NON. It begins with CTC, which is Critical whilst in CTC a character has 50% more chance of doing a Critical Hit. Then it will change to BST, which is Accelerated Boost Gauge, this means your boost guage will increase dramatically when you attack. After this it will change to SKL, which means you get either x2, x4 or x10 Skill Points after defeating an enemy, depending on how strong they are. And finally will it will change into a random effect which can either be:
ETR, which increases Ether damage and recovery rates by 50%. T·C which is Turn Cancel, this means that when you attack an enemy who has an upcoming turn it will be cancelled. RV is Reverse, this means that when you are attacked your Boost Gauge will be increased! And the finally random event NON, which has no effect.
After having a random event it will return to CTC and repeat the cycle again.

To the right of the Event Slot is the Action Sequence, this shows whos attacking when. Along side your character icons you'll see three other icons, M, B and G. M stands for a Mechanical enemy, B stands for a Biological enemy and G stands for a Gnosis.

The Item commands allows you to use Items which you have obtained by defeating enemies during battle or have found on the field and the Ether Command allows you to use Ether Skills which you have obtained from purchasing Skills from the Skills Menu, which can be accessed by pressing Triangle button on the field.
Whilst at the Battle Command Menu you can press Right to bring up even more commands, they are Change, which allows you to change your party in the heat of battle; Escape which allows you to flee from a battle if you are playing as Shion or MOMO and finally Special, which allows you to do one of three special attacks as KOS-MOS.
